Recognizing the challenge of designing a facility that showcases healthy, adoptable animals, Beaufort County Animal Services & Control, in partnership with the Hilton Head Animal Society, enlisted GBA to help create a combined animal campus serving both organizations. GBA aimed to design a calming, stress-free environment that would encourage adoptions while prioritizing the well-being of the animals. Consulting with shelter medicine professionals, the design incorporated odor control, acoustic balance to reduce stress-related reactions, and disease prevention strategies. The 21,000 sq. ft. campus included an adoption center, medical clinic, and the county’s intake facility, improving staffing and operational efficiencies. The Lowcountry-inspired architectural character of the facility reflected the welcoming spirit of the community, creating a space that both residents and staff could take pride in.
