161 Rutledge Ave

Size: 3,800 sq ft

Location: Downtown Charleston, SC

2018 Carolopolis Award Winner

While others tried to tear down this 1845 corner store for years, GBA teamed up with an equally ambitious owner who wanted to save the building, restoring it to its former glory. Working closely with the preservation groups and local craftsmen, we were able to restore this jewel on the corner into a ground floor restaurant space with two apartment units above, each having 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

We at GBA take pride to have brought back a building that was nearing collapse from neglect. With no records of the buildings details other than the Sanborn maps, and what was underneath the existing faux stone stucco. Through our research of neighboring buildings, I feel that the detailing and craftsmanship have brought this building back to its former glory as its presence is vital to the streetscape on both Rutledge Ave and Doughty Street.
